A. The Basics
So who wrote this and why?
This was compiled and written by erez basically as a general solution to wrongful GlassJAw rumors and perceptions, and to answer some of the questions fans have.
Can I use it?
Sure. Give credit.
How do I know this is the latest version of the FAQ?
Check with glassjawband.com or see the date up top. If it looks outdated, it probably is. If you know of an outdated version of this FAQ collecting internet dust somewhere on the web, please contact the owner of the page.
I have a question... who can I direct it to?
Go ahead and send in your questions to xirondragon@yahoo.com and if it's good, you might find it up here.
So how will I know if/that this is the latest version?
If the date at the top seems old, it probably is. Please report to the webmaster of the site you are reading this on if it is not properly cought up.
Are there any GlassJAw newsgroups?
There are a few mini newsgroups lying around but they are pretty barren. If you know of any or plan on starting one, go for it.
..Yahoo clubs?
Yup, there are a few... click here for the directory. Many of them are outdated, so feel free to do something about that.
Where can I find some good GlassJAw sites on the web?
The official site can be found at glassjaw.com (formerly siberiankiss.com). For fansites, try doing some Yahoo searches, go through links pages, see what comes up.
Where can I get the latest tour info?
Granted, all fansites have the obligatory "tour dates" section. Pollstar.com tends to find out things quick too, and f course the official website is useful as well.

B. The Band

So who's in the band?
GlassJAw seem to constantly be plagued with member changes (among many other things). As of now, the line-up is:
  • Daryl Palumbo - Vocals
  • Dave Allen - Bass
  • Todd Weinstock - Guitar
  • Justin Beck - Guitar
  • Larry Gorman - Drums
  • Check the profiles section at the site named above for a more in-depth look at the members.
Well who else has been in the band?
The most notable of the outrageously large bunch are:

    Matt Horton (bass)
    Brian Meehan (??)
    Michael Ayo (??)
    Mitch (bass)
    Stefan Linde (drums)
    Scottie (drums)
    Ariel Telford (bass)
    Manuel Carrero (bass)
    Sammy Seiglar (drums)
    Durijah (drums)
    Kris Baldwin (guitar)
    Dave Buhkta (bass)
    Nick Koskoff (guitars).

This is just a fraction of the list!
    Where are GlassJAw from?
    Long fuckin' Island.
    What is a "GlassJAw"?
Daryl's father was a boxer, and a "Glass Jaw" is a boxing term for one's vulnerability to a knockout punch.

They also chose the name due to Daryl wanting to name his band something tough sounding, to fit with the cliché at the time. They decided to pick a name that had the two-syllable sort of hardcore band feel because at the time, all the bands had names like Chokehold, Uppercut, Hacksaw and Splitt Lip. GlassJAw sounded fitting to them, so they stuck with it. Daryl was later heard discussing how he has often thought of changing the name due to it's misleading phonetics.
How is it spelled? Do I have to include the "JA" thing?
The members of the band and the official site capitalize the "JA" making the name GlassJAw instead of simply Glassjaw. The concept itself began when Paul Brown (EYEWTKAS Art director) was designing the cover art for Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence and decided to have some fun with it. All in all, capitalize whatever is easiest to you. It doesn't make a difference.
*What font is that written in?
For the EYEWTKAS style font, see if your computer has Impact. The "GJ" logo was written in Arial bold.
How come some people call GlassJAw The GlassJAw?
To put an end to the debate, occasionally Daryl and a few others refer to them as The GlassJAw, but the band's name never was such. That was added onto the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang album cover so it would look better.
How/when did the band get their start?
1993... Daryl and Beck met as counselors at a local summer camp. Daryl was wearing a Bad Brains shirt and Beck was wearing an Anthrax shirt (each other's favorite bands) and they immediately met & began playing guitar together. They soon fused into a garage band know as "glass jaw".... after releasing a few demos and having deep connections with the Long Island hardcore heroes, things worked out and before long they became vastly recognized in the area. When they got signed they were exposed to a broader fanbase through touring and promoting, and things pretty much picked up from that point on.
So wait, how did they get signed?
Ross Robinson (early Deftones, early Korn, early limp bizkit, Slipknot, Amen, At The Drive-In, others) was looking for a new breakthrough band to produce. After listening to countless "adidas rock / rap metal" they finally heard GlassJAw's demo and immediately scheduled a date to check them out live and in person. Ross was blown away, he signed them to his I AM divison of RoadRunner, they recorded, it all worked out. The members cannot say enough good things about Ross.

This quote from Todd pretty much sums it all up: ""It was actually all by accident. We were talking to an A&R guy at Roadrunner Records on and off and then Ross was over in New York emergency mixing - he wasn't supposed to be there - for the Amen record. He just happened to be there by chance and he was looking for a third band for his I Am label. He'd listened to 80 tapes or something - it was all Korn wannabe bands - and he heard us, and as soon as he heard us, he came to our practice within a day. We played for literally 30 seconds and he stopped us and said "You've got a deal right now". We thought he was kicking us out - we wanted to punch him!"
    When did this all happen?
GlassJAw got signed on May 16th, 1999. To learn more, check the EYEWTKAS area of this FAQ.
Who runs the official website - siberiankiss.com?
Beck and his friend Lee tepper, who also design GlassJAw's merchandise. Daryl and a few others posts news and other stuff.
Suppose I want to meet the band?
Go to a live show. If you try to meet them, you probably will. At this point of their career, it's really not too hard. They usually will "skank around" by the merch stand, sometimes in the tour bus area. If you don't see them before or after a show, chances are that something has them down or busy. Passes aren't hard to obtain either... be a good photographer/filmer/street teamer/fan and as long as the venue doesn't suck they will probably be fine with it.
    What instruments do they play?
Beck and Todd use Gibson Les Paul Studios with EMG pickups, they occasionally will switch with ESP Custom Eclipses. Todd runs his through a Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier head and Mesa/Boogie 4x12 cabinets and Beck runs his through a Peavey 5150 head and Marshall 4x12 cabinets with a red "XXX" taped onto it. The bassist, whoever he may be at the time you are reading this, most likely uses a Fender Precision bass.
Is GlassJAw a Jewish / Christian band?
    No, they are strict Monks.
Do the members of GlassJAw hate women?
No.. they love screaming and yelling about women that have broken their hearts and played with their heads... but this doesn't mean they hate all women in general. (but most!!) In all honesty, Daryl is a very respectful and loving boy and he appreciates females a lot, well some of them.
I emailed GlassJAw and didn't get a response.
Take some gonko boloba, because for the time being the only means of email is band@glassjaw.com. Good luck getting a reply . .
I have tried and tried... and I can't put a finger on where GlassJAw fall in the musical spectrum.
That's understandable. Many fans complain how they can't quite label GlassJAw's style of music. But just the same, will it make your life THAT much better to be able to pigeonhole them into a genre? I will usually tell people "sometimes they're heavy, sometimes they're not." It seeps into it's own little corner in the whole rock and roll genre. Another factor you must consider is how much their style has shifted so much over time, and continues to. They're not afriad to expirament either.

Daryl's description of the music is "shit".

Beck adds:"In the overall mainstream music scene, you're in the public's eye, and we don't know where the hell we fit in. You got your shitty, crappy pop, and then you have your shitty, crappy, "Yo wassup dawg" like rapcore with the attempt Adidas Rock, whatever you wanna call it. And it's kinda like, we're not a heavy metal band, we're not a pop band, we kind of pave our own little path, and where we're gonna land I don't know"
    What do GlassJAw wear?
    Does it matter?

They mostly shop at thrift shops or wear vintage clothes. They will also wear band shirts every so often.

Words from the wise, courtesy of Daryl: "There is a lot of kids out there now that are learning that it's not so much about fashion. I am completely anti-fashion within music and people are now realizing it's not about wearing Adidas jumpsuits and having long dreads and yellow sunglasses. It's about why you're up there singing about what you're singing about in the first place. "

If you check out the cd booklet, it says " GlassJAw wears Base Brooklyn Gear exclusively". Here's what a fan said regarding this: "Base Brooklyn is a "Brooklyn based" company that supports bmx, and the lifestyle around, they make everything form bmx equipment to belts and t-shirts and hats, they also support and endorse bands, and put out bmx videos and other products pertaining to the l". You can find out more about Base Brooklyn and similar brands at triple5soul.com.
    Who has influenced GlassJAw?
Musically, everything having to do with Long Island Hardcore. Daryl usually credits Bad Brains, Morrissey, Depeche Mode, Niel Rubenstien and Anthrax for defining his lyrical and musical perspective growing up and to this day. GlassJAw getting signed, brought in, supported and mentored by Ross Robsinson also dictated many changes within the band.
I just bought EYEWTKAS and I love it. Is their older stuff worth checking out?
Well, its a matter of opinion, but screw it.... ask most fans and they will tell you it's amazing stuff.
What is the "Metro" logo I see on their merchandise, website and cd tray?
It's not a metro sign.... If you notice on the album cover, there is a big diagonal billbox with "S M T W T F S", each letter representing a day of the week. Basically, since the "M", which stands for Monday, is flipped open, they chose to go with that. If you ever try illustrating that panel, you'd have to enclose it in a recangular box-type-thing. That is what it is.
What's the significance of that "Teeter" thing on Daryl's shirt?
The infamous TEETER t-shirt that Daryl wore to one photoshoot and one show caused much cunfusion. Daryl wore it as somewhat of a goodbye gift to a great friend who goes by the nickname "Teeter" who was moving away. He made it himself, crooked letters and all. Teeter, herself is the owner of the shirt right now, and still has close ties with the band and Daryl. She is a very cool cat, if you ever get to meet her give her a shout! She can still be spotted at local Long Island shows... She's the one with the pink and black hair.
What bands are GlassJAw "down" with?
Mainly straight edge/hardcore/Long Island bands. Vision Of Disorder, Silent Majority, CR, Earth Crisis, Will Haven, Boysetsfire, J Majesty, the Movielife, Thisyearsmodel, The Weebles, Blood Red, Inside, Shai Hulud... far too many to name. GlassJAw are also in a group of bands called the "Lost In Space" clique. These bands (GlassJAw, Silent Majority, Thisyearsmodel, and The Movielife) all share some same kind of ideals and grew up together. GlassJAw have been full-time tourmates with Soulfly, Deftones, Shadow's Fall, Drowningman, VOD, The Movielife, New Found Glory, Nonpoint, Boysetsfire, Shai Hulud and many many more. Look up some famous LIHC bands, and you can bet that a great amount of them are friends of GlassJAw. That's ultimately what got them playing outside of basements and getting started in the first place.
What music do the members listen to?
Daryl's all-time favorites are Morrissey, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Bad Brains, Shelter and Anthrax. He currently is a Movielife nut, and can't stop raving about the "Lost In Space" Clique described above.
Beck is said to listen to lots of rap, and just a lot of hard core and "tha scene"
Todd's all-time favorites are Radiohead, Burn, Michael Jackson, Quicksand, old Metallica and VOD. He's now is into bands like At the Drive-In, Cave-In, Ben Folds Five, Rocking Horse Winner, and of course Radiohead.
Larry listens to bands from all stretches of the musical spectrum. In terms of rock and the like, he's into anything from At The Drive-In to Tool to Slipknot to Earthling.
    What do the abbreviations mean?
    A few common ones are:
    GJ - GlassJAw
    SK - Siberian Kiss
KKBB - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
    DP - Daryl Palumbo
    LIHC - Long Island Hardcore
    SXE, XXX - Straight Edge
EYEWTKAS - Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence
Can I get ahold of any of the members on AOL Instant Messenger?
Unless they give you their screen names, the answer is no.
How about chat rooms and the like?
You may catch them in a chat room or two... they are only human. As far as scheduled chats go, if there ever is one, expect to hear about it here.
Has the JAw collaborated with any other bands out there?
It is not rare for other bands to join GlassJAw on-stage for a song or two.

As for actual recorded collaborations, Daryl appears on Blood Red's "3 Song Demo", Silent Majority's "Popular Opinion", Finch's "Grey Matter" and "Project mayhem", Wesley Wollis' "GlassJAw", Thisyearsmodel's 'Leopard Prints & Studded Belts' and did a little backup singing in an advance version of Movielife's 'Another Friend' (not the album version). GlassJAw have had their share of guest appearances as well... Ray Cappo, good friend of the band as well as Shelter/Youth of Today vocalist does a cameo on the song "Modern Love Story" and Brian Meehan sings backup in "Star Above My Bed".

    C. The People
    Is Daryl sick?
Wouldn't call it "sick," but yes: Daryl lives with Crohn's disease. it's an intestinal virus.
    Really?? How's he doing?
Daryl says: "I guess if I was sickly right now, I would be ill. I'm not sick right now, but I do suffer from an illness. It's called Crohn's disease. It's genetic and I'm on medication for it, and I've had surgeries and stuff."

My advice to you is to not let it monopolize your thoughts on him and the band. He is fine, and anyone who knows him does not even think about it. Some people, as soon as they think of Daryl, think of a sick man, but it's not like that.
Why is Daryl so infatuated with Godzilla?

Straight from the source: "Godzilla is the most important thing in the world to me. It's just something that I grew up being into and it's the one thing that interests me more than anything else in the world. Godzilla to me is a metaphor for relationships and everyday life. Relationships between friends and women. Godzilla is a lesson in morality that I think too many people laugh their way through. Godzilla is just my favorite thing in the whole goddamn world. "
I heard somewhere that Daryl's middle name is 'Gojira'?
No... he wrote that in a survey for getmusic.com as a joke and it escalated from there. "Gojira" is actually the japanese word for Godzilla.
How many instruments does Daryl play?
Guitar, bass, piano, singing (well of course) and a few others.
I heard that Daryl also acts? Please explain.
Daryl appears in the movie "The Price of Air". Not much is known about this movie yet, but it will hopefully be out soon. Daryl says his scene may have been cut.
Daryl's always talking about his damned virginity?
He seems to enjoy talking about his sex life. I don't.
Is that Daryl playing piano on the secret song?

Yup. In fact, piano was the first instrument that he ever learned to play. He also plays the piano in Midwestern Stylings.
    Is Daryl/Beck straight edge?
Yea, they are strongly straight edge (Not at a violent point mind you). Even if Daryl wanted to do anything, his complicated health problems would only get worse. Daryl and Beck got matching X's tatooed into their lower lips.
So I'm guessing that the other members do drugs?
Of course, none of them are junkies. And it is rare for you to find them in a "higher state" but a few of them do hit the buddha.
I could have sworn he said something about being drunk.
I saw him drinking a can that looked like beer.
    I saw him acting plastered.
No. If anything it was a joke.
What is this 'Soap Stealing' thing I keep hearing about with Todd?
Todd used to Work at Bath & Body Works (If you listen to the live mp3 of Ry Ry's at the Brownies, Daryl talks about "Todd's work, Bath and Body Works"). Anyway, Todd stole a bar of soap from there and got fired. Since then, the band members have been cracking jokes about him for it. The "stealing soap" reference on the official site is a joke.
Why does Larry sign autographs with devil signs? Is he satanist?
Larry himself probably doesn't know the answer to this. Sometimes, he'll still do it, and sometimes he won't. Either way, hes not satanist at all... (maybe just a little bit)
I heard Beck uses a Fender Telecaster but have never seen him use it.
Beck used a flametop Tele for several of the tracks on Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence. He also played it live for a short period of time and no longer uses it.
How many instruments does Beck play?
Tons. The man can flawlessly work practically an instrument like an act of God. He is extremely musically inclined.
Hey, I heard Beck was in a porno mag?
Haha... it's true. Beck was in Latin Inches.
    How/why did Sammy leave?
Durijah was the drummer at the time that GlassJAw got recruited to RoadRunner Records. Ross felt that he didn't fit the band's image and style, and asked that Sammy Seiglar replace him. Durijah is now in the band The Stryder. Sammy replaced him for the recording of Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence, and left shortly thereafter for his own personal reasons. He is now in the band Rival Schools United By Fate. Larry Gorman replaced Sammy and drums for GlassJAw still.
What are those "nerd" glasses that Daryl wears?
Daryl says they are no-name brand cheap frames he and his mother found a few years ago.

    D. The Merch

First of all, where can I cop some GJ merchandise?
Merchdirect.com, or more specifically merchdirect.com/glassjaw. They are also sold at live shows at, you guessed it, the merch stand.
    I heard Beck runs Merchdirect?
Beck and Lee, and all their recruits. Even the infamous Teeter has been doing some work for the crew.
What's up with the girl "spread eagle" on that one shirt?
That's just GlassJAw messing around. It's a modified Kappa (a popular sports brand) logo, which is a cartoon of a girl and guy sitting back to back. GlassJAw, being the crazy little kids they are, decided to get creative with it.
What is the skate hoodie all about?
That is GlassJAw's take on a skate t-shirt produced originally by the company "Shorty's" who have a hoodie virtually identical to that with the exception of the wording (It has "S" on eithe
